FAQ
Ask us anything.
Good financial decisions start with good information. Here's what owners want to know before they hire anyone.
i.
Pricing & Billing
Will my monthly invoice change from month to month?
+No, and that's intentional. Each package is a single flat monthly rate that covers your complete back-office needs. Your investment doesn't fluctuate with transaction volume, seasonal swings, or the complexity of routine work.
What's included versus what costs extra?
+Your monthly rate covers the full scope of back-office work plus the software you need: Xero, Gusto, receipt and mileage tracking, and document storage, with no à la carte upgrades or complexity charges. Additional fees only apply to genuinely out-of-scope projects, and always after we discuss them with you first.
How is my pricing determined?
+Recurring pricing is tied to your annual revenue and the level of support you need, up to $3M in annual revenue, with engagements above that quoted on scope. The Financial Department is $5,000/month, Bookkeeping & Fractional CFO is $2,500/month, and Monthly Bookkeeping Essentials is $1,200/month. One-time services are priced on scope, with the Restaurant Financial Health Assessment at a flat $599. Making under $1M a year? Book a consultation for special pricing.

Choosing a Service
Which service is right for my restaurant?
+It depends on where you are. Monthly Bookkeeping Essentials is the foundation: accurate, current books and monthly reporting. Bookkeeping & Fractional CFO adds forward-looking CFO guidance on cash flow, KPIs, and performance. The Financial Department is our most comprehensive tier, embedding a full financial department in your operations. And Bookkeeping Clean-Up is a one-time project to get disorganized records current.
How do the recurring tiers differ?
+Monthly Bookkeeping Essentials is the foundation: accurate books reconciled every week, monthly statements, sales tax, and active compliance. Bookkeeping & Fractional CFO adds fractional CFO advisory: cash flow planning and forecasting, budget development and variance analysis, weekly KPI reviews, vendor and cost evaluation, and management reporting. The Financial Department is the most comprehensive: it adds payroll processing, financial review of major decisions, internal controls, growth planning, and priority owner support.
When should I add fractional CFO support?
+When your books are in good shape but you need higher-level strategy: cash-flow forecasting, profitability analysis, growth planning, or funding prep. Our Bookkeeping & Fractional CFO tier pairs full bookkeeping with that CFO guidance at $2,500/month, and The Financial Department takes it further with embedded controls and approvals at $5,000/month.
How does Bookkeeping Clean-Up work?
+It's a one-time project priced on scope. We reconstruct and reconcile prior periods, correct coding, rebuild your chart of accounts, and deliver accurate financial statements you can rely on and file from. Then you can transition into a recurring service on a clean foundation.
What's included in a Restaurant Financial Health Assessment?
+A structured, one-time review of your financial position: margins, prime cost, labor, cash position, and compliance standing, delivered as a written assessment with prioritized recommendations. It's $599 and doesn't include ongoing services.
What happens during Restaurant Investment Due Diligence?
+Independent financial due diligence for buyers and investors evaluating a restaurant. We verify reported revenue and expenses, test margins, identify liabilities and compliance exposure, and report on what the numbers actually support. Priced on scope for the deal.
Can I move up to a higher tier later?
+Absolutely. Monthly Bookkeeping Essentials is designed as an accessible starting point. As your business grows or your needs expand, we'll review your financials and goals and move you up to Bookkeeping & Fractional CFO or The Financial Department whenever you're ready.

How We Work
What does "risk management" in bookkeeping actually mean?
+Most bookkeepers work backward from transactions; we work forward from exposure. As a licensed commercial claims adjuster, Erika evaluates your operation for financial risks such as workers' comp claims, unemployment disputes, property damage, and business interruption, and keeps documentation that's defensible if any of them ever surface.
Do you handle chargeback disputes from delivery platforms?
+Yes, it's included. Uber Eats, DoorDash, Grubhub, and similar platforms generate chargebacks and disputed transactions that represent real, recoverable revenue. We manage the dispute process end to end: identifying claims, submitting documentation-backed responses, and following through to resolution.
What does audit protection actually cover?
+It's built into how we work, not a separate product. Every filing, deduction, and categorization is documented assuming a potential IRS, CDTFA, or FTB review, so if an audit is ever initiated, your records are ready and we stand with you through the process.
Do I need a CPA if I work with The Kitchen CFO?
+We're a bookkeeping and fractional CFO firm, not a CPA firm. That said, The Kitchen CFO partners with a trusted CPA, so when you need tax filing and related services, we can refer you directly, and our clients receive specialty rates through that partnership. You're also welcome to work with your own CPA.
How do you handle California sales tax for restaurants?
+California's rules for prepared food are complex, and taxability shifts with service method, location, and transaction type. We manage all CDTFA filings with the correct treatment for each type, because sales tax errors are a common audit trigger, and your filings should hold up to scrutiny.
Do you only service California?
+No. Our practice is built around the complexity California food service businesses face, including CDTFA and FTB rules, sales tax nuances, and state compliance, but we work with restaurant and food-and-beverage owners beyond California too. Bookkeeping, financial strategy, cleanup, and CFO services aren't state-bound, and our cloud systems (Xero, Gusto, and receipt management) work anywhere. For clients outside California, we simply tailor the sales tax and compliance side to your state's specific requirements.
